Here's how you cut an external thread on a dart shaft:

1. Prepare: Securely clamp the workpiece (e.g., the shaft) in a vice. The diameter should correspond to the core diameter of the thread.
2. Position: Place the die with the appropriate die stock straight on the end face of the workpiece.
3. Cut the thread: Turn the die with firm pressure and a uniform motion clockwise into the material. After half a turn, turn a quarter turn back to break the chips.
4. Clean: Remove all chips and clean the newly cut thread.
5. Test: Check the fit of the external thread by carefully screwing on a dart barrel.
